The cerro negro volcano lives up to its name: it’s an all-black mountain. The very first time I heard of it, it was through the exploits of a crazy handlebars rider, a Frenchman, who descended the steep slope of this dormant volcano by bycicle at mind-boggling speed. The fall was inevitable, but fortunately not lethal. The difference in altitude is impressive!
Climbing up Cerro Nego
The climb is neither long nor strenuous, and the panorama from the summit is incredible. You can see Leon and the surrounding area, as well as some of the neighboring volcanoes that make up the Maribios range.
Volcano boarding down
The latest attraction is volcan boarding down this famous slope. A few local agencies offer this service. I’ve often thought it a pity to sully the cerro park with a few trucks and visitors, but it’s fair to say that the excursions there are done intelligently. You can’t say it’s crowded either. The experience is worth taking, and memories are sure to linger. An invitation to some thrills, it’s easy to do, for any age and at any speed possible. Fast or more leisurely, you can go all out.
Visiting volcanoes El Hoyo and Telica
And how could we fail to mention the volcanoes next door, El Hoyo and Telica. When visiting Leon, the former capital of the revolution, it’s almost inevitable to plan a trip to the mountains and volcanoes surrounding the city. It’s black, it’s beautiful and it’s volcanic. Walking on the slopes of a volcano always makes you feel small in comparison with these giants rising from the earth. There are always a few enthusiasts and connoisseurs, and it’s always interesting to see that some people have a real passion for visiting these black and beautiful peaks.
Cerro negro holds a special place in the Mariobios chain. 60 km of range. It’s not very big, not very high either, but rather young and awake. Climbing it is easy but, what can I say, the panorama blew me away the first time, even more so as we were just coming out of the rainy season. I was on this black mountain and everything was green all around, everything was beautiful.
