Sitting between 700 and 1,400 metres above sea level, the Matagalpa and Northern Highlands region enjoys a cooler, greener climate than the rest of the country. It includes the departments of Matagalpa, Jinotega, Estelí and Madriz, known for mid-mountain landscapes, coffee plantations and cloud forests. It’s a favourite destination for hiking, community tourism, eco-tourism and stays on coffee fincas. The area is easily reached from Managua (3 to 5 hours by road depending on where you go) and offers a natural, authentic alternative to classic itineraries.
