The Granada region, in the department of the same name, concentrates several of Nicaragua’s major attractions within less than an hour’s drive of each other. Granada is an iconic colonial city, founded in 1524 on the shores of Lake Nicaragua. Nearby you’ll find Apoyo Lagoon, a protected nature reserve in an ancient crater, as well as Mombacho Volcano, covered in tropical forest with accessible trails. The area is also known for artisan villages (notably pottery in San Juan de Oriente) and viewpoints over the lagoon from Catarina. It’s an ideal base to discover a wide variety of landscapes and activities in just a few days.
