Managua and central Nicaragua
Capital city and volcano
Managua is Nicaragua’s capital and the country’s main gateway via its international airport. Although often seen as a stopover city, it has several points of interest: the old cathedral, Roberto Huembes market, Salvador Allende waterfront, and viewpoints over Lake Xolotlán. Around Managua, the central region includes easy-to-reach, popular sites such as Masaya Volcano (active and visitable at night), Masaya Lagoon, the artisan town of Masaya, and the Tiscapa Nature Reserve. It’s a practical base for day trips to Granada, León or Apoyo Lagoon.
