Nicaragua may be a small country, but it has so much to offer. With its lakes, Pacific coastline, Caribbean coast, volcanoes, and natural reserves, it knows exactly how to amaze every free spirit !
Here are my 5 must-do activities to enjoy without moderation:
Scuba diving in Little Corn Island
In the middle of the Caribbean Sea lies Little Corn Island: an island covered with mango trees where life feels slow and peaceful. With its jungle paths, white sand beaches, and welcoming locals, the island is a little paradise.
But perhaps it’s underwater that the island reveals its greatest beauty! The coral reefs are colorful and healthy thanks to the locals’ way of life. Reef fish, as well as nurse sharks, thrive here. The underwater world of the Corn Islands is a beautiful example of harmony between marine life and environmentally respectful traditional fishing.
But the real highlight is undoubtedly diving with hammerhead sharks! These magnificent sharks, harmless in the Caribbean, use their flat-shaped heads to detect the electric fields emitted
by fish hidden in the sand, making them highly efficient hunters. With their unique way of swimming, they are absolutely fascinating to observe in their natural habitat. A truly unforgettable experience!
Best weather season: february to may
Best visibility: march to june
Required level: Open Water/Level 1 certification required for a fun dive

Kayaking through the Istian wetlands in Ometepe
Lake Cocibolca is the third largest lake in Latin America. At its heart lies the volcanic island of Ometepe, formed by the union of the Concepción and Maderas volcanoes. Unique in its kind, the island offers exceptional wildlife and flora, along with a glimpse into Nicaragua’s pre-Columbian history.
By kayak, you can explore the Istian wetlands and spot many bird species, caimans, and perhaps even howler monkeys hidden within the lush vegetation.
A beautiful nature experience, perfect for enjoying sunrise or sunset while soaking in the peaceful atmosphere.
Best season : November to May

Surfing on the Pacific coast
If there’s one activity you absolutely have to try in Nicaragua, it’s surfing!
The country’s Pacific coastline stretches over 360 km, making Nicaragua a true playground for both experienced surfers and beginners wanting to discover this addictive sport.
From mellow waves to barrels, from beach breaks to point breaks… there’s something for absolutely everyone!
Take the time to enjoy a surf lesson with a local instructor on the southern beaches before sipping a cocktail at sunset. Or head north to ride powerful waves in areas still untouched by mass tourism, where you can enjoy something rare nowadays: having the lineup and the beach almost to yourself.
Small waves season: December to April
Big waves season: May to November
Horseback riding in Miraflor
North of Estelí lies the Miraflor natural reserve, a beautiful place that seems frozen in time, combining ecotourism with local farming traditions. Nature is abundant here, and the reserve is home to no fewer than 150 different orchid species!
Enjoy a sunny day exploring its wild trails on horseback, riding through lush vegetation and reaching a small waterfall where you can swim and cool off.

Canyoning in Somoto
The Somoto Canyon is a 4.7 km long natural canyon that shelters the source of the Río Coco, the river forming the border between Nicaragua and Honduras before flowing into the Caribbean Sea.
Exploring the canyon combines hiking, swimming, cliff jumping, and boat rides, creating a fun and accessible adventure for everyone. A perfect experience to enjoy solo, with friends, or with family!
